The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a warning to consumers about a series of recalled electric heating pads. The Oct 25 announcement warns that using Mighty Bliss electric heating pads can result in serious injury.
Mighty Bliss heating pads were manufactured and distributed by Whele LLC, which does business under the name Perch. These products were sold online on sites like Amazon and Walmart to consumers, healthcare providers, and long-term caregivers. The day before the safety announcement, the FDA published Whele’s recall notice for “product safety concerns.”
The recall removed 544,212 Mighty Bliss units manufactured and distributed between Jan 8, 2021, and July 21, 2022. These products were recalled after Whele received over 280 complaints between July 2021 and September 2022. These complaints reported that the heating pads would overheat, spark, burn, or otherwise electrically malfunction, leading to consumers being shocked, burned, or developing rashes or irritation. Of the complaints reported, 11% included reports of shocks, burns or other injuries.
The FDA has recommended that all affected devices should be discontinued from use, and if caregivers are using an electric heating pad, to use it for less than 20 minutes to prevent burning. Additionally, the agency recommends examining these types of devices for frayed wires, holes, tears or sparking.
Whele has recommended that consumers immediately stop using the recalled devices, ensure that the device is powered down, and cut off the power cord. Additionally, the recall notice informed consumers how to pursue reimbursement claims from the company.
